In Part 1 of this series, we examined the ministry of John the Baptist as he prepared the way of the Lord in the advent of his 1st Coming. In Part 2, we noted the words of Jesus as He contrasted the respective ministries of John the Baptist and Elijah. We also cited how Elijah can be identified as one of the Two Witnesses in preparation for the 2nd Coming of the Lord. In this article, we will consider the ministry of Moses as one of the Two Witnesses and the role he has in helping to prepare the way for the 2nd coming of the Lord.
 
Moses was both a teacher and priest who had a life span of 120 years. The Bible also notes that the Lord was the one who buried Moses at the time of his death (Deuteronomy 34:5-7). We later discover that the Lord was surrounded by both Moses and Elijah at his Transfiguration (Matthew 17:3). What is it about Moses that we need to learn as it relates to the Lord’s 2nd Coming?
 
Moses had a Revelation of God
Moses had the privilege of having a revelation of God as he stood by the cleft of the Rock (Exodus 34:6-7). This was the result of Moses wanting to know God intimately, to know His ways and His Glory (Exodus 33:13, 18). After Moses descended from the mountain, he had a notable Glory that people could see.
 
So when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him. (Exodus 34:30)
 
As Lighters, we are called to “Be the Light of Christ Everywhere”. Think of the witness we can provide to others as we spend intimate time with the Lord. It is not just the words we speak that provides a witness, it’s the life we live and the fruits of intimacy in our relationship with God. Do you have a similar hunger to know God and His ways?
 
Moses was Given the Law of God
And when He had made an end of speaking with him on Mount Sinai, He gave Moses two tablets of the Testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God. (Exodus 31:18)
 
Moses based his ministry according to His law written on the two tablets of stone. How did the children of Israel respond to God’s given law?
 
Now when the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered together to Aaron, and said to him, “Come, make us gods that shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him. (Exodus 32:1)
 
This would be a recurring problem for Israel throughout the Old Testament, eventually leading them into captivity in Babylon for their idolatry. It is a recurring problem for much of today’s church as well. Moses, as one of the Two Witnesses, will be upholding the standard of God’s Law in preparation for the Lord’s 2^nd Coming. He will highlight a message and standard of holiness. Will it be a message that will be received and embraced?
 
The adage of “history repeating itself” certainly applies to examples from scripture. There was a time when the leadership of Moses was being challenged by internal leadership. What was the problem? Many were not happy with the message of holiness that Moses was bringing forth to the people.
 
They gathered together against Moses and Aaron, and said to them, “You take too much upon yourselves, for all the congregation is holy, every one of them, and the Lord is among them. Why then do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of the Lord? (Numbers 16:3)
 
A leader by the name of Korah was chief in this rebellion. Interestingly, we are warned on the likes of Korah by the Prophet Jude.
 
Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah. (Jude 1:11)
 
Moses was used of God to write the Book of Deuteronomy prior to Israel going into their inheritance at the time of Moses death. It was filled with instruction concerning God’s Law and how it was to be upheld. The Book of Deuteronomy is also a last-day manual in helping to prepare the church for His return. This manual elevates God’s Law while placing an emphasis on holy living. Is this the message being promoted from our pulpits today?
 
We will continue our examination in Preparing the Way of the Lord in upcoming devotionals. The primary thrust of the Two End-Time Witnesses is their message in preparing God’s people for His return.
 
He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. (Luke 1:17)
